Pain, Numbness or Weakness? It Could Be a Nerve Call
It was a Saturday morning. Akshit had recently moved into a new flat in the city and was excited to set up his space. He had bought a heavy wooden cupboard that needed to be shifted from the ground floor to his third-floor apartment.
Instead of waiting for professional help or calling a friend, he decided to do it himself.
"I felt strong, healthy. I thought—why not?" he later recalled. “I’ve lifted weights at the gym. This is no different.”
Midway through dragging, Akshit felt a sudden pull in his lower back and left leg. He paused, gasped, and instinctively let go of the cupboard, which clattered down a few steps behind him.
His heart pounded—not just from the exertion, but from the sharp pain that had taken over his body. He brushed it off at first, thinking it was just a minor muscle strain. But the symptoms didn’t go away. In fact, they got worse. Something felt off…

Within a week, everyday tasks became a challenge. Walking long distances? Difficult. Standing for too long? Unbearable. Sitting in one position for more than a few minutes? Intolerable.
Worried and confused, Akshit finally decided to consult a doctor.
The Doctor’s Visit
Akshit was nervous at first he booked appointment of Nerve Conduction Study; the procedure was quick but he feel little discomfort during the test. Small sensors (electrodes) are placed on the skin, a mild electric pulse is sent through the nerve pathways and in EMG puncture a needed muscles with the help of needle.
The Diagnosis?
A single nerve involvement, specifically affecting the Common peroneal nerve in his left leg, which had been strained due to the improper weight lifting. Neurogenic changes in Left TA & Peroneal longus and active denervation in Left TA.
Doctor Reassured Him:
“The good news is, it’s just one nerve and it’s treatable. But early intervention is key.”Akshit was prescribed a combination of rest, physiotherapy, anti-inflammatory medication, or nerve supplement.
The Role of Nerve Tests in Diagnosis
When pain doesn’t go away with basic rest or treatment, it’s time to look deeper. That’s where nerve tests like NCS (Nerve Conduction Study) and EMG (Electromyography) come in. These tests help identify which nerve is affected, the extent of damage, and guide doctors in choosing the best treatment.
Early diagnosis can prevent permanent damage, reduce recovery time, and restore quality of life
Why This Story Matters?
Akshit’s story is not uncommon.
In today’s fast-paced world, many young adults engage in physical tasks without proper awareness of body mechanics. Whether it's lifting furniture during a move, carrying heavy backpacks, or sitting in poor posture for hours, nerve injuries can sneak up silently.
